Karana has strong ties to the Kew community and many of the residents were referred by friends from the area. The residents continue to engage with the local community through the lifestyle program, and students from several schools in the Kew/Hawthorn area regularly visit and perform for residents. Room to host family and friends

At Karana, visitors are welcome at any time of the day and they encourage family and friends to use the shared spaces to enjoy time with their loved one. There are lounges, a sun room and many outdoor areas available for residents and their visitors. They also invite visitors to take part in activities and mealtimes when visiting. The staff are happy to serve tea and coffee to visitors on request.

Pastoral care

Pastoral care is an important part of life at all Baptcare communities, including Karana, where they provide residents with regular opportunities for formal worship and reminiscence. These include ecumenical services, which are held three times a week in the on-site chapel. They also hold a Catholic mass three times a year.

Social and recreational support

Each day is eventful on the lifestyle program, which is packed with a wide range of different social and recreational activities to support residents’ wellbeing. Currently, the lifestyle calendar includes art, craft, music and daily exercise groups, as well as opportunities for guided relaxation, e.g. meditation and balance class. Residents can also continue familiar hobbies, including cooking and gardening, and Karana hosts a weekly Friday night event for socialising. Karana promotes an ‘active mind’ through competitive play and considered conversation, e.g. Scrabble, bingo, board games, ‘news’ discussion etc. And they also offer diversional therapies.

The comfort of familiar routines

The model of care at Karana prioritises consistent daily routines that reassure residents and inspire confidence. However, the Karana staff encourage residents to try new activities and become actively involved in community life so they can maintain their interests and enjoy a full life.

MPIR increased to 8.38% pa

The Maximum Permissible Interest Rate (MPIR) has increased to 8.38% pa from

For a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) of $550,000 the equivalent Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) increases to $126.27 pd ($46,090 pa).

The Reserve Bank increased the cash rate again in November 2023, which has a flow-on impact to the MPIR. This is now the highest MPIR since January 2012 and more than double the MPIR that applied just a little over one year ago.

Also the refurbished Daily Accommodation Contribution (DAC) rate of $66.94 pd means an equivalent Refundable Accommodation Contribution (RAC) of $291,564. In June 2022 the RAC was $544,719, meaning that aged care homes that are “RAD-focused” are now less likely to look at fully supported residents if they have exceeded their 40% supported ratio, as the RAC has now dropped below $300,000.

The MPIR increase to 8.38% will have a major impact on residents as they enter an aged care home from

Aged Care Star Rating System

Where can I find the Star Ratings?

From , the Government has started to use the STAR RATING system for registered aged care homes (new homes will be allocated a Star Rating after 12 months of operation).

Star Ratings are displayed on the Aged Care Provider Search within the My Aged Care website.

The Star Rating is based upon 5 levels with the middle rating denoting only a minimum baseline of ‘Acceptable’ care quality and services.

Continuous Improvement

The Star Rating System has revealed that 41 % of aged care homes are performing at a 5-star (excellent) or 4-star (good) level.

Star Ratings also reveal that astonishingly 5 % are performing below the minimum standards set, receiving a dismal and disturbing (Improvement Needed) or (Significant Improvement Needed) Star Rating.

Star Rating Support

We support full public disclosure of those aged care homes that are making the effort to exceed the regulated standards and community expectations.

We also support the naming of aged care homes that do not currently provide quality levels of aged care services to the frail elderly and vulnerable members of our community.

The Star Rating system is a key component of the aim for continuous improvement to our aged care system.
